Australian authorities intend to legislate the construction of a new Russian embassy building in Canberra on a site located near the parliament. This was reported by the Brisbane Times on June 15 radiosvoboda.org.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov

As Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced, the government had been given very clear security advice "because of the risk posed by a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House".

In the interests of Australia's national security, the decision to cancel the lease was quickly made, Albanese said, adding that "the government condemns Russia's illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine."

The Australian government emphasized that it is not about banning the Russian diplomatic mission in the country's capital, but only about building an embassy on a specific site.

The legislative initiative of the government regarding the site for the construction of the Russian embassy must still be approved by the parliament. Representatives of the parliamentary opposition have already declared that they support the government's decision.

In 2008, Russia signed a 99-year lease agreement for a plot of land less than a kilometer from the Australian Parliament building. A new Russian embassy was supposed to be built there, but work never got underway, prompting the National Capital Construction Authority (NCA) to issue a vacate order on the site. The court recognized the actions of the NCA as illegal, after which, as the Brisbane Times writes, the government intervened in the situation.

The plot, which was leased to Russia for the construction of the embassy, is located next to the Chinese diplomatic mission. Ukraine also showed interest in this area.
