More than a year after Kyiv first expressed interest in the aging fleet of M1A1s, and months after Australia rejected a request to hand over its decommissioned Taipan helicopters, the Australian government has confirmed it will provide Ukraine with 49 US-made tanks.

Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy, who is attending a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels this week, will tell his Ukrainian counterpart directly about the latest support package.

"These tanks will provide the Ukrainian Armed Forces with greater firepower and mobility and complement the support our partners provide to Ukrainian armored brigades - Australia is unwavering in our support for Ukraine," he said.

In July, the Australian government announced the largest package of military aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, amounting to about 250 million Australian dollars - approximately 158 million US dollars.

After the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Australian authorities condemned the actions of the Russian authorities and imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation. The restrictions apply to hundreds of Russian citizens and companies.
