"Another country took our side in the fight for the rights of Ukrainian children who suffered from illegal displacement and deportation. We are grateful to Australia for its support and willingness to help return the little Ukrainians home," Lubinets said.

The Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children is a joint initiative of Ukraine and Canada and was launched on February 2, 2024.

Australia became the 41st country to join the initiative.

Deportation of Ukrainian children

According to Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, Russia illegally deported 19,5 children from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the invasion, Ukraine has returned more than 500 children.

This fact became the reason for the ICC in The Hague to issue an arrest warrant for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Russian ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova.

In April, Japan joined the coalition for the return of Ukrainian children.

In June, Greece joined the initiative, but only as an observer.
