Belarus is preparing for war: a threat from the north in 2026
16.05.2026In May 2026, the tension on the border with Belarus is felt especially acutely: new roads, artillery positions, and accelerated mobilization make us think about the future of the region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again stressed the risks of Russia's strategy of drawing Minsk into direct confrontation. According to the head of state, the Kremlin is actively pushing Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko to participate in a new offensive against the northern regions of Ukraine or even the Baltic states. These warnings come against the backdrop of real changes in the Belarusian economy and army, which are already operating at full capacity for the needs of Russian troops.
Defense industry of Belarus: from civilian to military
More than five hundred enterprises of the republic are involved in the implementation of Russian defense orders. Among them are the production of 152 mm artillery shells, rocket munitions for the Grad systems, as well as microchips and optical devices for T-72 and T-90 tanks. The Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant continuously produces chassis for Iskander missile systems and S-400 anti-aircraft systems. According to experts, by 2029, new and modernized facilities will be able to supply tens of thousands of units of ammunition annually.
The process of reorienting the economy began back in 2022. At that time, Belarusian legislation was quickly adapted to the needs of the Russian army. Today, the republic has effectively become a rear base where components are produced that Russia cannot obtain due to sanctions. In 2026, supply volumes increased by 40% compared to the previous year, and some factories are working in three shifts.
Zelensky's warning and the opposition's reaction
Volodymyr Zelenskyy directly stated: Russia is trying to drag Belarus into the war in order to open a new front in the Chernihiv or Kyiv regions. Representatives of the opposition initiative "BelPol", which includes former security officers, confirmed these words. They note that Lukashenko has already begun partial mobilization of reserve officers under the age of 27 and has intensified conscription in border areas.
In the regions bordering Ukraine, construction of new roads and the establishment of artillery positions continues. The Russian contingent located in Belarus is regularly regrouping. According to satellite images released in May 2026, the number of vehicles near the border has increased by 25%.
Possible scenarios: Ukraine or the Baltics?
Experts do not exclude that the Belarusian army can be used not only against Ukraine. Preparations for a possible conflict with NATO look no less likely. In 2026, Russia will actively modernize Belarusian airfields and ammunition depots. Some of them are already capable of receiving heavy transport aircraft and placing up to 10 thousand tons of ammunition.
The Belarusian regime continues to seek suppliers of explosives and equipment in Iran and China, circumventing sanctions. This allows it to maintain the pace of production even with limited access to Western technology. At the same time, Ukraine does not have the opportunity to strike Belarusian factories, since they are located on the territory of a sovereign state.
Economic consequences for the region
The integration of the Belarusian economy into the Russian military machine led to a 3,8% GDP growth in the republic in the first quarter of 2026. However, this growth is due to military contracts, not the civilian sector. Many enterprises have stopped producing consumer goods, reorienting themselves to defense production.
International observers have recorded rising food and fuel prices inside Belarus, while Lukashenko has promised social benefits to military personnel and their families to maintain public loyalty.
International reaction and prospects
NATO countries have stepped up border monitoring with Belarus. In May 2026, Poland and Lithuania held joint exercises near the border involving more than 15 troops. The European Union is considering new sanctions against Belarusian companies that work for the Russian military.
Analysts believe that the coming months will be crucial. If Russia continues to put pressure on Minsk, the likelihood of an escalation in the northern direction will increase significantly. At the same time, opposition forces in Belarus themselves are calling on the international community to increase pressure on the Lukashenko regime to prevent a new round of conflict.
