Britain introduced sanctions against Russia for using chemical weapons against Ukraine

On Tuesday, October 8, Britain introduced sanctions against three Russian institutions and one individual in connection with the use of chemical weapons by the Russian military against Ukraine. This is stated in a statement published on the website of the British government European Truth.

The statement notes that it is about the use of chlorpicrin on the battlefield, a substance that the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) qualifies as a chemical weapon.

The list of sanctions includes the radiological, chemical and biological defense forces of the Russian armed forces and their commander, Ihor Kyrylov, who is directly accused of involvement in the use of chemical weapons and the spread of disinformation.

Also included in the list are the 27th and 33rd research centers of the Ministry of Defense of Russia. They are said to be involved in the development of chemical and biological weapons.

As you know, in May, the USA, in justifying new sanctions measures against Russia, indicated that the Russian troops used a banned chemical substance, chlorpicrin, against the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The message of the State Department also emphasized that Russian troops also use other irritant substances in Ukraine that are similar in their properties and are usually used by the police to disperse demonstrations.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed that Britain "will not sit idly by" while Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin blatantly flouts international law, including the Chemical Weapons Convention.

"I have set myself the task of confronting this malicious activity, and I will not back down," he emphasized.

In high concentrations, chlorpicrin is highly irritating to the lungs, eyes and skin. Although this substance is not as dangerous as other chemical weapons, it causes vomiting, dizziness, severe inflammation of the eyes, nose, throat, respiratory tract, convulsions, as well as loss of consciousness and skin damage.

All these symptoms appear suddenly, and in a high concentration a person dies in a matter of minutes. In addition, chlorpicrin contaminates food and water.

In early September, Britain announced restrictive measures against Iran in response to its decision to transfer ballistic missiles to Russia.

The country also imposed sanctions on two legal entities and five vessels involved in the transportation of Russian liquefied natural gas.
