It specializes in the development of light and medium launch vehicles, lunar landers, and orbiters for commercial and government customers. The company was founded by Tom Markusik, P.J. King, Michael Blum, and other entrepreneurs in 2014 as Firefly Space Systems.

In 2017, after bankruptcy, the company's assets were purchased by Noosphere Ventures, led by Ukrainian entrepreneur Maksym Polyakov, and it was renamed Firefly Aerospace.

Polyakov invested significantly, but in 2022, due to the demands of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), he sold his stake in AE Industrial Partners due to national security concerns.

Products and services

Alpha rocket: A lightweight launch vehicle for delivering up to 1 ton of cargo to low Earth orbit (LEO). The first test launch took place on September 3, 2021, but failed due to an anomaly. The second launch in October 2022 was more successful.

Blue Ghost Lunar Lander: Used for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) missions. In 2025, Firefly made the first successful commercial landing on the Moon.
Elytra: An orbital vehicle for maneuvers and operations in space.

The company is also developing a medium launch vehicle (MLV) in collaboration with Northrop Grumman, which will have seven Miranda engines and a significantly greater payload capacity.

Achievements

In February 2021, Firefly received a $93,3 million NASA contract to deliver cargo to the Moon in 2023 as part of the Artemis program.

In 2025, Blue Ghost successfully landed on the Moon, a historic event for commercial companies.

The company is partnering with Lockheed Martin, Blue Origin and others to carry out missions including exploring volcanic formations on the Moon.
