Night attack by 97 drones on Ukraine: air defense shot down 70 targets and held the power system

The night when a swarm of drones covered the Ukrainian sky.

On the night of January 8, Russia once again tried to exhaust Ukraine with a massive drone attack: 97 strike UAVs of various types were launched into the air, a significant part of which were directed at energy and other critical infrastructure.1 Despite the scale of the shelling, Ukrainian air defenses destroyed or suppressed 70 targets – more than two-thirds of the entire swarm, although about three dozen aircraft were able to break through and strike at rear areas.1 2 .

Where and how they attacked: route map

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, UAV launches were carried out from several directions: from the Russian Millerovoye and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions, from the temporarily occupied Crimea - from the Chauda and Hvardiyske regions - as well as from occupied Donetsk.1 This configuration allowed Russia to stretch Ukrainian air defense in a wide arc from south to east, forcing it to simultaneously cover industrial centers, energy facilities, and military hubs at a considerable depth in the territory.2 This is a test not only for technology, but also for the management system: it is necessary to reallocate resources between different threat areas in real time.

The majority of the drone swarm was made up of Shahed-type strike vehicles in Russian modifications, which are produced at enterprises in the Russian Federation, but, according to information from the Ukrainian side and international research, there were also other Russian-designed loitering munitions and kamikaze drones in the air.1 3 The variety of UAV types with different speeds, altitudes, and flight profiles complicates air defense operations and forces the use of a wide range of means, from anti-aircraft missiles to mobile groups with portable anti-aircraft systems and large-caliber weapons.

Air defense work: dry numbers and their hidden price

As of this morning, the Air Force reported that air defense forces in eastern and southern Ukraine had shot down or suppressed 70 enemy drones out of 97 launched.1 . Officially recorded 27 successful hits of strike UAVs at 13 locations, as well as one case of a downed device or its fragments falling on a separate area of ​​the terrain, which led to local destruction1 "Suppression" refers not only to physical destruction, but also to the disruption or jamming of navigation and control systems, which causes the drone to go off course, crash, or miss its target.

The high percentage of interceptions has a downside: each such night means the cost of expensive missiles, risks for mobile air defense groups, and work under fire for calculations and operators of electronic warfare equipment.2 6 . Moreover, in the regions where drones managed to break through, we have damaged buildings, disrupted networks, injured civilians and rescue workers, who are not visible in the aggregate percentages of downed targets. Therefore, behind the dry figures of “70 out of 97” lies the reality of a long-term defensive campaign, where each hit is measured not only in square meters of destruction, but also in human fatigue.

Strike on cities: energy and everyday life

One of the most tangible consequences of the attack was new power outages in a number of regions, including the decision of the Dnipro authorities to extend school holidays due to blackouts caused by damage to energy facilities.1 4 . Where drones have hit their targets, it’s not just transformer substations or industrial sites that have been affected, but also the usual urban rhythm: traffic halted, hospitals switched to backup power sources, cold apartments in the morning. A strike on infrastructure entails a wave of everyday hardships that extend far beyond the point of the explosion.

At the same time, some regions manage to maintain the operability of critical systems thanks to backup power supply schemes and the accumulated experience of previous winter strikes.4 In Zaporizhia, for example, despite the threat of shelling and drone attacks, all boiler houses continued to operate normally, which ensured a stable heat supply to the housing stock.4 This is the result of previously carried out technical modernizations, a stock of equipment, and the coordinated work of energy workers and utilities, who actually live in a mode of constant mobilization.

Why Russia is betting on "shaheeds" and swarms of drones

For Russia, barrage munitions and strike drones have become a relatively cheap addition to missile strikes: one Shahed costs the aggressor much less than a cruise or ballistic missile, but when used in large numbers, it is capable of overloading air defenses and penetrating defenses where previously a smaller number of weapons were sufficient.3 Against the backdrop of sanctions and limited access to high-tech components for modern missiles, the Russian defense-industrial complex is betting on mass production of drones and localization of assembly on its territory, importing individual components and electronics through third countries.3 5 .

Kamikaze drones also give Russia tactical flexibility: they can be launched in waves from different directions, change routes in flight, and combine them with missile strikes or the use of glide bombs.5 . Each such wave forces Ukraine to waste expensive air defense missiles on relatively cheap targets, which fits into a strategy of depletion of defense resources. The Kremlin expects that in the long term, the depletion of ammunition and human resources of the air defense can create “windows of vulnerability” for new series of strikes on critical objects.

How Ukrainian air defense is adapting: from point defense to swarm thinking

During the full-scale war, Ukrainian air defense has gone from an emphasis on protection against missiles and manned aircraft to a "multi-layered shield" where countering drones plays a major role.2 6 Along with NASAMS, IRIS-T, Patriot and other anti-aircraft missile systems, mobile fire groups equipped with MANPADS, large-caliber machine guns and thermal imaging equipment for working on low-altitude targets at night play a critically important role.6 This approach allows you to save on expensive missiles, using them for the most dangerous directions, and block part of the "swarm" with cheaper means.

A separate direction is the development of electronic warfare systems - from stationary complexes to portable "anti-drone" devices that can jam the communications or navigation of individual devices on their approach to objects.6 . They do not replace anti-aircraft weapons, but complement them, creating additional barriers for the enemy and increasing the cost of each attack. The role of civilians also remains important: timely reports of drone movements, discipline during air raids, and compliance with camouflage rules reduce the enemy's chances of achieving the effect of surprise.

Who are drones hitting: energy, industry, logistics

The patterns of previous massive attacks indicate that the main targets of Russian drone swarms are energy facilities, large industrial enterprises, oil depots, and logistics centers through which military and humanitarian cargo passes.4 5 . Russia is trying to disrupt stable power supply chains, complicate repairs and modernization of the power system, stop production at defense plants, and create chaos at transport hubs. Even without directly hitting generation, strikes on transformer substations and distribution networks cause serious damage, which take a long time to recover.

The effects of such attacks are felt far beyond specific sites: businesses are forced to adjust schedules and switch to generators, households are forced to live with outage schedules, and medical and rescue services are forced to work in conditions of constant uncertainty.4 This is not only an economic blow, but also a psychological one: regular nighttime attacks exhaust people, deprive them of sleep, raise their baseline level of anxiety, and create a background against which any new threat is perceived more acutely.7 It is precisely this “erosion of endurance” that the Russian strategy of terror is counting on.

Psychological front: life under the constant hum of sirens

The constant risk of night attacks changes people's daily behavior: many go to bed with their clothes on, keep an "alarm bag" at the ready, and are woken up by sirens more often than by an alarm clock.7 . Research on military psychology shows that living under prolonged air threats increases the level of anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, exhaustion, and in some cases, symptoms of post-traumatic stress.7 At the same time, Ukraine's experience shows that even in conditions of continuous attacks, society is able to develop protective mechanisms - from humor and self-organization to support networks and volunteerism.

That is why, in parallel with the strengthening of PPO, the importance of psychosocial assistance programs is growing: the work of crisis services, hotlines, mutual aid initiatives at the level of homes, streets, and communities.7 The ability to acknowledge one's own fatigue, ask for support, and create safe "communal" spaces with family or friends becomes no less important an element of resilience than concrete shelters and powerful air defense complexes.

International dimension: drones as an argument for strengthening Ukraine's air defense

Each wave of drone attacks is another argument for Kyiv in negotiations with partners about strengthening air defense: Ukraine demonstrates that modern warfare is a regular battle in the sky with relatively cheap but massive means of destruction.2 6 . Hence the emphasis on the supply of additional air defense systems, ammunition for them, modern radars, electronic warfare equipment, as well as on the integration of the provided equipment into a single air situation management system. For the allies, this is not only assistance to Ukraine, but also an investment in their own security, because the methods used by the Russian Federation can also be used against other states.

Think tanks in the US and Europe are already considering the Ukrainian experience as a practical school for combating massive drone attacks.5 6 . Mobile air defense groups, combining missile systems and electronic warfare, building distributed energy networks and backup control centers – all this is gradually moving from “Ukrainian cases” into recommendations for NATO and EU armies. The war imposed by Russia is thus accelerating the evolution of Western defense thinking.

Ukraine's asymmetric response: its own drones against the Russian rear

Against the backdrop of Russian strikes, the Ukrainian army and defense industry are increasing their own unmanned capabilities: from tactical vehicles for the front to long-range drones capable of reaching Russian oil depots, ammunition depots, logistics centers, and military airfields.6 Such a “mirror asymmetry” forces Moscow to transfer part of its air defense and resources deep into the rear, disperse its formations, and use more expensive measures to protect what was previously considered unattainable.5 This does not eliminate the threat of new attacks on Ukraine, but it increases the price for the aggressor and weakens his capabilities.

Every successful night of Ukrainian air defense operations against Russian drone swarms is not only saved power lines, factories, or houses, but also a clear signal: the strategy of terror does not change Ukraine's political course.2 6 On the contrary, the longer such a campaign continues, the more obvious it becomes that massive strikes only deepen international support for Ukrainian defense and accelerate the development of its own defense technologies and strike drone systems.
