New Zealand introduced new sanctions against Russia for the war in Ukraine

New Zealand has introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia as part of its ongoing response to its illegal invasion of Ukraine. These measures are aimed at organizations associated with Russia's occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Winston Peters, reports RBC-Ukraine with reference to Scoop.

"Russia's ongoing illegal war of aggression against Ukraine is a violation of the rules-based order," he said.

The minister emphasized that the occupation of the Zaporizhzhya NPP poses a serious threat to nuclear safety, and called on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine.

The new sanctions will affect five individuals and six legal entities involved in supporting the invasion.

"Sanctions against Belarusian actors represent a joint effort with our like-minded international partners aimed at condemning and bringing to justice those who support Russia's illegal actions," the minister added.

Peters noted that New Zealand is acting in coordination with international partners, joining more than 35 countries that are also introducing measures against those who facilitate Russian aggression.

Since passing the Russia Sanctions Act in March 2022, New Zealand has already imposed sanctions on more than 1700 individuals and entities, as well as a number of trade restrictions.

Aid to Ukraine from New Zealand

Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, New Zealand has consistently provided comprehensive support to Ukraine.

Wellington imposed tough sanctions against Russian individuals and entities involved in hostilities and provided significant financial and humanitarian aid.

In February 2024 and at the NATO summit in Washington, new aid packages aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities and meeting the humanitarian needs of its population were announced.
