US President Donald Trump's special representative for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, said that Russia's war against Ukraine will not be ended on the battlefield, as not only diplomacy but also economics play a key role. According to him, Trump's economic strategy involves manipulating the global oil market in order to weaken the Russian economy.

"He (Donald Trump — ed.) focused on the economy. When he spoke, for example, in Davos, about the price of oil, if you bring the price of oil down to, say, $45 a barrel, that would be a kind of break-even point. If you reach that point, you would really hurt the Russian economy," Kellogg said.

In addition, the special representative said that the Trump administration is considering using frozen Russian assets to purchase American weapons.

On January 23, during an online speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Donald Trump said he was going to ask Saudi Arabia and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to lower oil prices. In his opinion, this could stop Russia's war against Ukraine.

On January 22, the US president again called for the conclusion of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia as soon as possible, threatening to impose new sanctions on Russia if Moscow refuses the agreements.

CNN previously reported, citing sources, that Trump has instructed aides to arrange a phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to them, the newly elected US president wants to talk to the Russian president in the first days after his inauguration to discuss a personal meeting.

The Russian leader believes that if peace talks begin within the current legal framework, they will be illegitimate due to Ukrainian legislation that prohibits Zelensky from holding direct talks with Putin. In response to this interview, the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, emphasized that Putin is trying to promote the idea of ​​negotiations between Russia and the United States without the participation of Ukraine and that "this will not happen."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.

Analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) argued that the Kremlin does not seek to compromise in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
