Based in San Francisco, KoBold has among its shareholders Breakthrough Energy Ventures (backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos), as well as T. Rowe Price Group Inc., Bond Capital, Andreesen Horowitz and Equinor ASA.
KoBold has been drilling for a little longer than a year.
The deposit may be as large as a mine located in neighboring Congo. Last year, it produced almost 400 tons of copper.
While KoBold plans to begin production early next decade, it still needs to publish an updated reserve estimate and complete a feasibility study before building the $2 billion facility.
KoBold uses its artificial intelligence to process drilling data and optimize copper and cobalt prospecting at Mingomba. The project aims to predict long-term shortages of materials such as cobalt, nickel and lithium.
