President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a conversation with Friedrich Merz, the leader of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which together with the CSU won the Bundestag elections. The Ukrainian head of state reported this on the social network X on Tuesday, March 4.

"A good conversation with the leader of the CDU party, which won the Bundestag elections, Friedrich Merz. We coordinated positions. Thank you for the support. We in Ukraine greatly appreciate Germany's efforts to restore European security and protect life in Ukraine. We remember that Germany is the leader in supplying air defense systems to Ukraine and plays one of the leading roles in ensuring the financial stability of our state," Zelenskyy noted.

He also added that he had agreed with the likely next German Chancellor "on further cooperation and contacts."

The CDU, according to Reuters, confirms the fact of the conversation, but does not comment on its content.

As is known, while in opposition, Merz criticized the German Chancellor's position on not providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. In a recent interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Merz said that Germany should "continue to equip the country well militarily," but should not "become a party to the war."
