Armenia supports draft law on intention to join the EU

The Armenian parliament has passed a bill on European integration in its second reading. The document calls on the government to begin the process of joining the EU. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Armenpress.

The Armenian parliament on Wednesday approved in its second and final reading a bill calling on the government to begin the process of the country's accession to the European Union.

The document was supported by 64 deputies, 7 spoke against.

The bill was introduced in the National Assembly through the "Eurovote" citizens' initiative, which collected 60 signatures, exceeding the required minimum of 000.

In January 2025, the draft law was approved at a meeting of the Armenian government, after which it was submitted to the National Assembly for consideration. The National Assembly adopted the draft law in the first reading.

The opposition faction "Ayastan" boycotted the vote, while "Pativ Unem" voted against.

Armenia's accession to the EU

Armenia is gradually deepening its cooperation with the European Union. The European Union supports Armenia's aspirations for democratization and development, including through financial assistance and reform programs. However, a key challenge for the country is the need to balance the European course with Russian influence.

Geopolitical tensions in the region, including the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, are also hampering integration processes. At the same time, strengthening cooperation with the EU could be an important step for Armenia to strengthen its independence and development in difficult geopolitical circumstances.

Recall, in July 2024, it became known that the ambassadors of the European Union gave the "green light" to start a dialogue on visa-free travel with Armenia and agreed to provide military assistance from the European Peace Fund.

In addition, on Thursday, January 9, the Armenian government approved the draft law "On the Beginning of the Process of Accession of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union."

The draft law was submitted to the National Assembly for discussion as a public initiative, and now the government must express its position. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized that he recommends supporting the draft law, noting that Armenia and the EU have had active and dynamic relations in recent years.
