Ukrainian drones hit the Angstrem plant in Zelenograd: how the attack shook Moscow's defense illusions
18.05.2026The night when smoke over Zelenograd forced Moscow to reconsider its defensive illusions was yet another reminder of how quickly the balance of power in a protracted war can shift.

On the night of May 17, 2026, Ukrainian drones carried out a precision strike on industrial facilities in Zelenograd. According to military expert Pavel Narozhny, the attack had a clear military and informational purpose. The Angstrem plant, once the leading Soviet center for the production of microcircuits, was at the epicenter of the events. It was there, according to open-source investigations, that the Russians established the production of components for high-precision missiles and drones.
Military component: a strike on microelectronics
The Angstrem plant in Zelenograd was considered a key enterprise for the Soviet and Russian electronics industry for decades. After 2022, its capacity was partially reoriented to the needs of the military-industrial complex. According to analysts, the company supplied microcircuits for the guidance systems of the Kalibr and Iskander missiles, as well as for Geran-type drones. The strike on May 17 damaged at least three workshops where the chips were assembled and tested. According to preliminary data, production could be stopped for four to six weeks. This creates a real shortage of components for Russian high-precision systems, which are already experiencing shortages due to sanctions.
Pavlo Narozhnyi emphasized that the Defense Forces of Ukraine deliberately chose an object related to microelectronics. Such a choice is not accidental: without modern chips, the Russians cannot mass-produce precision ammunition. According to information from open sources, in 2025, Angstrem received a state order for 12 billion rubles specifically for military products. Now part of these funds is under threat.
Information effect: smoke that cannot be hidden
In addition to its military significance, the attack had a powerful information resonance. Black columns of smoke over Zelenograd, captured on numerous videos, quickly spread across the network. In Moscow, which is traditionally considered the most protected city in Russia, such footage makes a special impression. Narozny noted that a week before the attack, Volodymyr Zelensky allowed the parade to be held, and the very next day he canceled it - a symbolic gesture that emphasized the change in priorities.
The informational goal was achieved: Russian channels on Telegram and state media were forced to admit the fact of the attack, although they tried to minimize the consequences. At the same time, Ukrainian sources published satellite images of the damage, which confirm the accuracy of the strike. Such openness increases the trust in the information from the Ukrainian side.
Defense of Moscow: a wall that was breached
Moscow is traditionally protected by the most powerful air defense system in Russia. The S-400, S-500 complexes and numerous electronic warfare means are concentrated here. However, Ukrainian drones managed to overcome this protection. According to the SBU, the attack used modernized domestically produced drones with an improved navigation system and reduced visibility. This is not the first successful attempt to break through Moscow's air defenses, but the scale of damage to the Angstrom has become the largest in the last year.
Experts believe that the Russians will be forced to reallocate air defense resources from the front to protect the capital. This could weaken defenses in other areas. In addition, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine warned that the situation for residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg will worsen. Such strikes could become regular if Russia continues to drag out the war.
Economic consequences for Moscow
Narozhnyi also drew attention to the possible shortage of petroleum products. Damage to infrastructure could lead to temporary disruptions in fuel supplies. The Russian authorities have already begun to transfer resources from the regions to the capital, which will cause gasoline prices to rise in the provinces. According to economists, the shortage could last until the end of June 2026 if repair work is delayed.
International observers are recording growing tensions within Russia. Opposition channels on Telegram are actively distributing footage from Zelenograd, questioning the effectiveness of state defense. This is increasing internal instability in the aggressor country.
International reaction and further prospects
The events of May 17 attracted the attention of the world media. Washington and Brussels noted that Ukraine was demonstrating the ability to strike deep behind enemy lines using its own technology. This could affect decisions on further military assistance. At the same time, the Kremlin announced a “response,” but did not provide specific details.
Analysts predict that such operations will become more frequent. Ukraine continues to improve drone technology, and Russia is forced to spend significant resources on protecting its own territory. The balance of power is gradually changing in favor of the defender.
