Zelensky: Trump is clearly determined to put pressure on Russia

The President of Ukraine emphasized the unity of G7 leaders on the issue of increasing sanctions pressure on the Kremlin during a meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on June 18, 2026.

On Thursday, June 18, 2026, Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the next meeting of the Contact Group in the Ramstein format, where he immediately outlined Washington's key position. According to the head of state, Donald Trump is demonstrating a consistent willingness to increase pressure on Russia in order to force Moscow to sit down at the negotiating table. This statement was made against the backdrop of ongoing missile attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.

US position and G7 common line

Zelensky stressed that the American leader has clearly formulated his intention to strengthen restrictions against the Russian economy and military-industrial complex. During a telephone conversation on June 17, which took place immediately after the G7 summit, Trump, Macron and the Ukrainian president agreed on further steps. All participants of the G7 supported the idea that diplomacy should be the only possible option for the Kremlin.

Analysts note that this synchronization of positions was made possible by new intelligence data on the state of the Russian economy. According to IMF experts' estimates published in May 2026, sanctions have already reduced Russian GDP by 4,8% compared to 2024. Additional restrictions on the export of technology and energy resources may intensify this effect.

Ukraine's needs in missile defense

Separately, Zelenskyy emphasized the need to strengthen Ukraine's anti-missile capabilities. Constant ballistic missile strikes on civilian objects require the immediate supply of modern air defense and missile defense systems. The Ramstein participants discussed the schedule for the transfer of additional Patriot batteries and the latest systems capable of intercepting hypersonic targets.

According to Pentagon sources, the United States has already prepared a $1,2 billion aid package, which includes interceptor missiles and components to modernize existing systems. The first deliveries are expected to take place in July-August 2026.

The June 17 Phone Conversation and Its Consequences

Zelensky's conversation with Trump and Macron lasted more than 40 minutes. The parties discussed not only the sanctions policy, but also the issue of the supply of F-16s and long-term security guarantees. The French president confirmed Paris's readiness to accelerate the transfer of fighters, and the American side announced plans to expand training programs for Ukrainian pilots.

The next day, June 18, Zelensky arrived at NATO headquarters in Brussels, where he held bilateral meetings with the Belgian Prime Minister and the Secretary General of the Alliance. During these talks, a delivery schedule for the promised F-16 aircraft by the end of 2026 was agreed.

Reaction of the international community

Zelensky's statement was quickly covered by the world media. Reuters reported on the attack by Ukrainian drones on the Moscow oil refinery that occurred the day before. Damage to the processing facilities led to a temporary shutdown of 15% of the enterprise's capacity. This event became another argument in favor of increasing pressure on Russia.

On June 17, the European Union finally approved a ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas from 2027. This decision became part of the sixth package of sanctions and could reduce the Kremlin's foreign exchange earnings by another 8–10 billion euros annually.

Military situation at the front

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the day on June 18, 204 combat clashes have been recorded on the front. The hottest areas remain in the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions. Russian troops continue to use ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones, which emphasizes the relevance of Ukraine's request for missile defense.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces, in turn, have intensified strikes on enemy logistical facilities. According to preliminary data, several ammunition depots in the frontline zone have been damaged, which complicates the supply of Russian units.

Economical pressure measurement

Experts at the Institute for the Study of War say that a combination of sanctions, military losses, and domestic economic problems is gradually draining Russia’s budget. In 2025, defense spending will reach 6,8 percent of GDP, a record high in the past 30 years. Further tightening of restrictions could force Moscow to reconsider its strategy of a protracted war.

Ukraine, for its part, continues to integrate into European defense and economic structures. Participation in the Ramstein meeting demonstrated that coordination with allies remains a key tool for deterring aggression.

Prospects for diplomacy

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine has sufficient tools to present Russia with a choice: either continue the exhausting war or return to negotiations. The unity of positions of the G7 and US leaders creates the prerequisites for diplomacy to become the only rational option for the Kremlin.

The next meeting of the Contact Group is scheduled for July 2026. It is expected to approve new military assistance packages and adjust sanctions policy in accordance with the dynamics on the front.
